Hundreds line up at Saugus COVID-19 testing site

SAUGUS, Mass. — Hundreds lined up for free COVID-19 tests in the parking lot of the Square One Mall.

No longer a red zone, Saugus was designated a high-risk community for the virus last month.

On the minds of many in line was just how rampant coronavirus is spreading – cases picking up again in Massachusetts and an outbreak spreading through the White House.

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said in a statement she had tested negative for the virus every day since Thursday before finally testing positive Monday. Her statement is an indication early tests did not detect the virus even if she had been exposed days earlier.

In light of McEnany’s statement and the possibility of a false negative, Steve Cusato, said he would likely get an additional test even if he tested negative.

“I would get tested again at some point,” Cusato said. “I just got a new job. So, I just thought it would be good to get it done now before I start work.”

Matt Krempin and his family were tested Monday after returning from a wedding in Wisconsin. He, too, has been watching the news and is aware of McEnany’s results.

“We’ve seen they have some false negatives, so we’re paying attention to that,” Krempin said, adding that his family has been self-quarantining and will continue to do so for an adequate amount of time regardless of their test results.
