How will Mother’s Day 2021 compare to last year’s?

BOSTON — As more people get vaccinated and Massachusetts starts to reopen, there’s a big difference, and you can feel it in the air. That’s good news for many as Mother’s Day 2021 approaches.

Last year, many restaurants only did take-out but not all. Capella’s in Needham was open, and it was busy. This year they expect to be even busier.

“Completely booked up and as full as we can be,” said Matt Collins, who is the general manager at Capella Restaurant.

And that’s with a party of six limit and spacing for COVID-19 precautions. Mother’s Day is a day that restaurants count on.

“In general, one of the busiest if not the busiest day of the year for restaurants,” Collins said.

The same goes for florists.

“As you can hear, the phone has not stopped,” Angel Diaz said.

Diaz is so busy he has stopped taking Mother’s Day orders by phone and online.

“To be honest, everything you see in my cooler is sold,” Diaz said.

But for Angel, 2021 is much busier than 2020.

“We’re getting twice as busy as last year,” Diaz said.

Flowers and dinner are nice, but this year Jim Gunn and his family will do what they did last year.

“Probably a picnic, so I guess probably the same as last year, go outside and go to the parks and things,” Gunn said.

It keeps them safe, and they also get to see their in-laws. His wife agrees.

“Yes, I get to see my mom, which is good,” Caroline Gunn said.

They were fortunate and live upstairs, so they saw them last year. For Caroline and Jim Gunn, it’s all about being with family.
