#HeyThanks: 13-year-old Cambridge boy feeding homeless through pandemic

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Three years ago, Liam Hannon says he was looking for an alternative to a traditional summer camp. He says he found a calling, helping the homeless right outside his front door in Central Square in Cambridge.

Liam told Boston 25 News, he started by making 20 bagged lunches with kind words written on them and distributed them in his neighborhood. But when he saw the faces of the recipients light up, faces many people walk by and ignore, he says he knew he needed to do more.

Liam’s Lunches of Love was born.

At first, Liam says he did chores to earn money for the supplies. Eventually, he started a GoFundMe page that quickly caught the attention of the national fundraiser. Liam was named a GoFundMe Kid Hero, and with the greater exposure, they’ve now raised nearly $60,000.

When the Coronavirus outbreak hit, 13-year-old Liam says he knew he could not stop delivering lunches to the homeless people in his neighborhood, many of whom, had become friends.

Keeping a safe distance in masks and gloves, he and his father continue to help feed those in need.
