COVID-19 vaccine appointments available for kids 5-11 at pharmacies

BOSTON — A day after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention signed off on COVID-19 vaccines for children aged 5-11, pharmacies across Boston have appointments available.

Boston 25 News found multiple appointments available for next week on CVS Health and Walgreens websites. A Walgreens spokesperson said vaccinations in select stores will begin Saturday.

A CVS spokesperson said in an email the company will begin administering vaccines on Sunday.

Boston Community Pediatrics’ Facebook page said the practice is preparing to vaccinate young children. UMass Memorial will start vaccinating the youngest children eligible on Monday, according to a spokesperson.

It’s unclear how soon most pediatricians offices will have supplies needed to administer the Pfizer vaccine to children whose parents allow them to get it.

But, the state is preparing for a massive rollout that will go beyond pharmacies and pediatricians to include vaccine clinics at public schools.

In a recent letter to schools, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and Acting Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health asked school leaders to engage parent groups and prepare resources for vaccination clinics.
