Boston mayor to get booster shot; vaccine clinics set up to encourage residents to get vaccinated

BOSTON — Boston mayor Michelle Wu will be getting her booster shot today at a clinic at city hall. It’s one of many clinics the city is hosting to encourage more people to roll up their sleeves. City officials are hoping the clinics will boost their vaccination numbers. The first clinic will be at city hall from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday.

The timing of these clinics is important. Cases are climbing everywhere after Thanksgiving, Christmas is right around the corner and of course, there’s concern about the omicron variant being more transmissible.

In the city of Boston more than 450, 000 people are fully vaccinated, which is about two out of every three people. But the number of those with boosters is considerably lower – only 21% as of the latest data. Meanwhile, the positivity rate in the city has crept back up to 5.2% and health officials have always said anything above 5% is a level of concern.

Earlier this week we told you the city would also be handing out thousands of free masks and at-home tests to areas with the highest infection rates.

The city announced several new vaccine clinics that will be open to any resident who wants to get a shot.

Another Course to College in Hyde Park will hold one Friday for residents five and up from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Vine Street Community Center in Roxbury will hold one this Saturday and the following Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, this Saturday, at the Brooke Charter School in Mattapan a vaccine clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome but some do allow appointments.
