98-year-old gets COVID-19 vaccine: ‘Anybody that doesn’t take it, I think, is very foolish’

DEDHAM, Mass. — Some of the most vulnerable people for COVID-19 are slowly starting to get the first dose of vaccine to protect against the deadly virus at long term care facilities throughout the commonwealth. Boston 25 News visited Traditions, an assisted living facility in Dedham which has had some positive COVID-19 case, but according to management, no widespread illness.

“There’s been some asymptomatic situations,” said Tish Davies-Verzino, facility director.

Saturday, was the first chance for seniors and staff to receive a dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

“That’s the only good thing about old age, I got the shot fast,” said Marlene Taymor, a resident who is 87-years-old.

Health care workers on the front lines were first in line for the vaccines, now it’s first responders and seniors at long-term care sites, but the overall supply of Pfizer and Moderna vaccine is lacking, according to state officials.

“I am praying that those manufacturers will get into line, (and) do it,” Taymor added.

Josephine Ruscito who is 98, was skeptical of the vaccine’s safety at first, that changed quickly.

“I probably wasn’t aware of the advantages to it as much as I am now,” explained Ruscito.

“At my age, that gives me hope for a few years longer.”

Another clinic is scheduled for February 6th for residents and staff to receive the second Pfizer shot.

“Anybody that doesn’t take it, I think, is very foolish,” said Wendall Putney, who is also 98-years-old.

Governor Charlie Baker said Friday that one of the most difficult parts of the vaccine rollout has been not knowing how much vaccine supply would be available and when but it is something Baker told Boston 25 News he’s hopeful the incoming presidential administration will be able to help clarify.

So far the state has received about 420,000 doses with 660,000 people in it’s first phase and only about 80,00 doses anticipated in the next upcoming weeks.
