Group of friends find 1,000-pound safe inside their Somerville home

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — Manoj Mishra is on a mission to get rid of a safe.

When asked, “How much does [the safe] weigh?” Mishra replied, “I think more than a thousand pounds.”

When Mishra and some friends bought a Somerville two-family home on Otis Street, inside they found a massive, 1,000-pound safe, something previous owners left behind.

“I tried to move it and I was like, ‘Goodness me, I can’t do this,’" said Mishra. “The safe was here when we purchased it but the place was full of junk, it was completely different.”

They remodeled the units but that safe didn’t go anywhere, it’s still there.

“In order to move it you have to lift it and you just cannot lift it," said Mishra.

He posted the safe’s history and mystery online hoping to coax someone to take it away. The former owner doubts anything is inside, but there is a curious history.

“The lady used to own a jewelry store, so he said online, ‘You never know, it’s all yours,'” said Mishra.

Replies flooded in.

“Almost 200 people responded, saying, ‘Yeah, yeah we are super interested, I can come [pick it up],” said Mishra.

However, none could get it out.

“The last group was able to move it by the stairs and they got stuck there and put it back," said Mishra.

Mishra’s realtor, Peter Cote, hopes the mystery of what could be inside will inspire someone.

“The previous sellers said there was nothing in it but you just never know," said Cote.

So, why won’t Mishra just hire a locksmith and open it himself? He says the issue is monetary.

“They charge $500 and I don’t want to spend that [money],” said Mishra.

To remove it from the house completely costs a lot more. He says that it would cost about $1,200. Mishra just wants someone to take it away before it’s opened.

“If you open it right now no one will take it, I think," said Mishra.

So the safe sits and wait for someone, anyone who can to take it away.

The condo goes on the market on Wednesday. Mishra hopes they will sell even with the safe inside.

If anyone has any ideas on how to remove it, he says he is all ears.
