Fugitive wanted by U.S. Marshals arrested following car accident in Wareham

WAREHAM, Mass. — A car accident in Wareham on Sunday landed a suspected drunk driver and a fugitive wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service in jail, according to police.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. on Cranberry Highway near Route 195.

Officers arrested the driver of one of the cars involved in the crash. They said Carolina Chumack, 32, of New Bedford, appeared impaired.

During their investigation, officers learned Chumack's passenger, Orlando Ortiz, 42, of Boston, was a fugitive wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service. The federal law enforcement agency said officers should use extreme caution because of Ortiz's past firearms charges.

Officers took Ortiz into custody without any issues.

Chumack is charged with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, marked lanes violation and open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
