Ferries packed as visitors rebook trips after Henri cancellations

WOODS HOLE, Mass. — Regular ferry service resumed Monday after cancellations Sunday during the storm.

Hy-Line Cruises had canceled all its ferries Sunday, and the Steamship Authority canceled its morning and afternoon ferries but resumed service at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

“We got delayed a day, we had to stay an extra day, which cost us some extra money for lodging,” said Kevin Rodd, of New Jersey. “We’re absolutely lucky because there are some people that are still waiting, they’re on the wait list, that are waiting to get off [the island].”

The Steamship Authority told Boston 25 News as it is rebooking passengers, it is prioritizing people whose trips were canceled Sunday.

Monday, ferries from Martha’s Vineyard to Woods Hole were packed.

“Oh it was nuts,” said Eric Bates, who lives on Martha’s Vineyard but rides the 5:30 a.m. ferry everyday to get to work in Woods Hole. “I’ve never seen so many people, that’s why I take the 5:30 because it’s empty, but there were cars everywhere, there was a cop with lights going.”

Bates said there were likely 80 people onboard that first ferry Monday morning.

Ferries departing Woods Hole were also filled as vacationers got a late start to their trips.
