Dump truck driver cited in fatal Cambridge pedestrian crash

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A 54-year-old Methuen man has been cited with negligent operation in connection to driving a dump truck when he fatally hit a pedestrian in Cambridge last Friday.

Preliminary investigation suggests the driver was traveling on Putnam Avenue at around 6:45 p.m. toward Newton Avenue just past the intersection with Magazine Street.

In an apparent attempt to turn right onto Magazine Street, the driver then began to back up his truck, subsequently hitting a pedestrian with the back of the truck.

The pedestrian, identified as 27-year-old Jie Zhao of Cambridge, suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead on scene.

The Middlesex District Attorney's office, the Cambridge Police Department and the State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction section are actively investigating this crash.

The driver's name has not been released at this time. A court date for the suspect has not been scheduled yet.
