DPH reports 10 new cases of vaping-related illnesses

BOSTON — The Department of Public Health is investigating ten new reports of vaping-related illnesses, bringing the total number of Massachusetts cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to 29.

Ten of the cases are confirmed and 19 are probable. To date, state health officials say they've received 152 reports of suspected vaping-related injuries; 29 have been reported to the CDC, 63 are under active investigation, and 60 have been ruled out.

Of the 29 cases reported to the CDC, 15 patients are female and 14 are male. The department says 25 patients were hospitalized and one of them died.

Twenty of the patients reported vaping THC with or without nicotine. Of the 20 cases, 13 reported vaping THC only, seven reported THC and nicotine, and eight reported vaping nicotine only.

This comes amid a battle over Governor Charlie Baker's ban on sales of vaping products. A hearing on the issue was scheduled for Tuesday, but was delayed until Friday so an expert can testify about vaping-related illness.
