BOSTON — The state is investigating an increase in reports of a foodborne illness.
More than 80 cases of the intestinal illness Cyclosporiasis have been reported since May, said Dr. Larry Maddoff, medical director for the Bureau of Infectious Diseases and Laboratory Sciences at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
The illness can cause bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Most of the cases have been reported in eastern Massachusetts, specifically in the greater Boston area.
The state is working with the federal Centers for Disease Control to investigate and identify the source.
In the past, it's been found in imported produce, such as leafy greens, raspberries and snow peas.
