Downed trees part of chaotic scene after weather rolls through Grafton

GRAFTON, Mass. — As residents in Webster dealt with an EF-1 tornado that touched down on Saturday morning, others out in Grafton had their own damage to clean up.

Videos and pictures from the chaotic scene showed wind tearing the siding off a building, as well as taking down large branches and trees.

Overall, it turned into a decent amount of damage, all done in a short period of time.

"The rain just picked up, and the winds just whi[[ed around the rotary," Grafton resident Bruce Philips said. "One minute, a quarter of it was gone. The next minute, the rest of it was gone, all the siding just picked right off."

Grafton resident Michael Labbe reported nine treetops gone, with three trees downed completely.

"A bunch of other branches down, other trees that are just blown over, not uprooted but just blown over,' Labbe said. "Flag poles off the house. My daughter's cleat is stuck on a roof back there, sot here was some strong wind here, no doubt."

Kabbe said the doors of one of his sheds blew open, sending a lot of his kids' sports gear outside.

As he tries to track down most of the gear, the National Weather Service is on its way to survey the damage from the day.

The damage wasn't as intense as it was in other parts of Worcester County, but Labbe said it was the type of damage that forced him to contact the NWS.

"We had 40-foot trees here that didn't come down, but yet a nine-footer was right out, so it just shows how the winds were," Labbe said. "It wasn't just a treetop wind, it was selective."
