Demonstrators gather in Boston to urge second impeachment of President Trump

BOSTON — A United States president has never been impeached twice before, but that possibility could become a reality for President Trump. A group of protesters pushed for that outcome in Boston Saturday.

Boston University political historian and author Tom Whalen said an article of impeachment will likely be brought forward Monday.

“It’s going to be incitement of insurrection and I think [that’s] exactly what happened this week, insurrection on Capitol Hill,” Whalen said.

Lawmakers, including Massachusetts Rep. Katherine Clark, are considering impeaching the president after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building Wednesday. The violence left five people dead, including a Capitol police officer.

Whalen said there could be enough evidence that President Trump incited this violence, but even if he goes to trial for impeachment over this, it could be difficult to convict him of this crime.

“It’s going to take a lot to convict him in a Senate trial,” Whalen said. “You’d need 17 Republicans, given the new 50-50 makeup in the Senate and need a 2/3 vote in the Senate in order to convict.”

If convicted, Whalen said Trump could be barred from any future office and possibly lose the ability to have a presidential library.

“Would Trump be stripped as well from a launching pad for his historic legacy if he is convicted in the Senate and it’s voted that he’s stripped of any honors pertaining to the office or anything under the United States?” Whalen said.

With less than two weeks left in office, it’s likely any impeachment trial would happen after President Trump is no longer president.

“Even though there’s 12 days left, there’s a lot of things, a lot of mischief he could do,” said Whalen.
