Daily Commuter Rail pilot program gets rolling in Foxborough

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The MBTA Commuter Rail begins a year-long test of regular service to Gillette Stadium Monday.

The Foxborough Commuter Rail station is right across the parking lot from Patriot Place. Trains run to the stop for some major events and Patriots game days, but a pilot program will test regular commuter service to and from the stop on weekdays.

The Commuter Rail will run 10 inbound and 10 outbound trains each day for the next year to see how it goes.

For commuters frustrated by a lack of parking at nearby stations, there are 500 spots at the stop. And people who live in Boston will have a special reverse commute fare of about half price.

The Kraft Group, the owner of the Patriots and Gillette Stadium, is celebrating the pilot program by bringing out the team mascot and cheerleaders.

But not everybody's thrilled. Some neighbors in nearby Walpole were among the most outspoken opponents.

Walpole police will have officers stationed at the railroad crossing on Summer Street to help the town acclimate to the regular train crossings.
