• DA: Peabody boy struck by car has died

    PEABODY, Mass. - A 13-year-old boy has died after being hit by a car in Peabody, the Essex District Attorney announced Wednesday. 

    On Tuesday night, Peabody Police were called to the Walgreens Plaza on Route 114 for a reported crash at around 8:45 p.m. Police say a 13-year-old boy was trying to cross Route 114 on a bicycle when he was hit by a car. 

    The boy was taken to Salem Hospital where he later died. His name is not being released.

    The driver, a 19-year-old Peabody man, is cooperating with the investigation and has not been charged. 

    "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victim at this incredibly difficult time," said Peabody Police Chief Thomas Griffin. 

    The crash remains under investigation. 

    Following the announcement of the boy's death, in a statement, the Superintendent of Peabody Schools said:

    "We are saddened by the great loss to our school community and we are respecting the families wishes for privacy at this most difficult time.  Please keep the family in your thoughts. Support services will be available to students as needed."

    Editor's note: A previous version of this story said the boy was hit last week. It has since been corrected to reflect he was struck by a car on Tuesday night and later passed away.
