DA: Investigation into cause of deadly Newton crash continues

NEWTON, Mass. — One week after a car crashed into a restaurant in West Newton and killed two people investigators are still searching for answers.

According to Middlesex district Attorney Marian Ryan, nothing is being ruled out and the investigation is being done slowly and methodically.

The Newton Sweet Tomatoes pizza shop remains boarded up, police tape surrounds the scene of the crash and a pile of flowers pays silent tribute to the victims.

Ryan said there is no timetable for when the investigation will be completed.

“It means it is a very open and active investigation. There are a number of people to be interviewed. Lots of records to be gathered, lots of information to be put together, so we can make a fair assessment of that. And that's what we are in the process of doing,” she said.

FOX25 cameras captured the driver, Brad Casler, as he was loaded onto an ambulance at the scene.

Authorities say he was driving the Volkswagen Tiguan that traveled down Chestnut Street, cut across the busy intersection at Washington Street, and then bust right into the restaurant.

Casler's drivers license has since been suspended, it’s unclear if he has been interviewed about the crash.

“One of the things that is important here is that we get to good answers. We can give good information, certainly to the family and to the public as well. And that is best aided by us getting through our investigation and being clear where we are with the information that we've been putting out,” Ryan said.

Casler does not face any charges at this point.
