DA: Arrest made in Sutton hit-and-run that killed jogger

SUTTON, Mass. — An arrest has been made in the hit-and-run that killed a local jogger, the Worcester District Attorney tells Boston 25 News.

Police say 51-year-old Daniel De Lima of Millbury was out jogging Wednesday morning when he was hit by a passing car.

Surveillance video from a nearby convenience store showed De Lima jogging along Singletary Avenue at around 6:00 a.m. about a mile away from where he was hit and killed.

Police had been looking for a white SUV with damage to the passenger side, the front bumper, the hood area and the front fender.

On Friday afternoon, the DA announced 39-year-old Shane Newman of Sutton has been arrested in connection to De Lima's death. Newman was behind the wheel of a white Cadillac SRX when he was arrested.

"The arrest followed an intensive three-day investigation by the Sutton Police, who worked around the clock," said Worcester County DA Joe Early.

"We tracked him down by doing great police work," said Sutton Police Chief Dennis Towle.

The De Lima family sent Boston 25 News the following statement:

"He is the most wonderful person we know. He was very loved and will be missed by many. No words to express our pain. Jogging was one of his favorite things in life. He left us doing what he loves. The family appreciates all the love and prayers."

Newman is being held at the Sutton Police Dept. and will be arraigned on Monday.

"We are happy that they found the person that hit him," said Andreia Makkas. De Lima's sister.

"Daniel was amazing. I'm his sister and he was my everything. Oh my God, I don't remember one thing in life that I decided to do without first checking with him."

Chief Towle said that the department likely received over 50 tips from the public throughout the investigation.
