Crews respond to empty car dangling off pier in Charlestown

Crews responded to a scene in Charlestown after a car was dangling off a pier, according to the Boston Fire Department.

The department said they arrived on scene to find a car with two wheels on the floating pier and two wheels off of it.

The car did not have anyone in it when they arrived, but the department said a man was trying to park in the lot in front of a restaurant when his car jumped a two-foot curb and went over.

"They were turning around and he hit the gas by accident," Brian Alkins of the Boston Fire Department said. "That caused the car to go over the edge of the pier."

Customers and employees raced to the car, and safely pulled the couple out, and if the floating dock hadn't been there, it could've been a much different story.

Apparently they were supposed to move it about last month or a few weeks ago," Lauren Keast said. "For that to be there, the guy got really lucky."

Firefighters secured the vehicle with a cable attached to a winch until a large tow truck with straps lifted it to the parking lot.

"Saw the car hanging on the crane," John Bishop said. "They have a pretty big rig over there with straps on it."

There were no injuries reported in the incident.
