Fire marshal: Arson fire in Fitchburg cancels classes at local middle school

FITCHBURG, Mass. — Crews responded to a fire at Academy Street and Elm Street early Monday morning and investigators say it was intentionally set.

Flames broke out around 2:30 a.m. at an abandoned building that used to house the BF Brown School.

An investigator was called to the scene. No injuries were reported.

Due to the fire, school was canceled for Longsjo Middle School.

According to State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey, the fire was intentionally set and investigators are asking for help finding who is responsible.

Chief Roy said, “If anyone saw or heard anything about 3 a.m. this morning or has any information about this fire, please call the confidential, toll-free Arson Hotline at 1-800-682-9229.” The Arson Hotline is part of the Arson Watch Reward Program which provides rewards of UP TO $5,000 that helps to solve the crime of arson.
