Court docs: Driver in double fatal crash was going 89 mph, had no license

EASTON, Mass. — The driver who was allegedly speeding when she crashed into another vehicle, killing the couple inside, appeared in court Friday.

Court documents Boston 25 News obtained show 33-year-old Sheri Vazquez had no valid driver's license with the RMV, only a state ID card. Police say Vazquez was speeding Thursday evening when she crashed into a vehicle at the intersection of Route 138 and Purchase Street.

"An Easton police officer saw a motor vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, he clocked that car going 89 miles per hour on his radar," said Assistant District Attorney Cynthia Letourneau.

By the time the officer turned around to stop Vazquez, prosecutors say it was too late.

"The driver and passenger of that car are now both deceased as a result of that crash," said Letourneau.

Both people inside the vehicle, 77-year-old Virginia Masefield and her husband, 79-year-old John, were killed from the impact of the crash.

Police say Vazquez was somehow able to jump out of her van and run.

"The defendant ran from the scene, the officers were able to see where she went. There were witnesses who followed her and she was later apprehended," said Letourneau.

Vazquez stood expressionless inside Taunton District Court Friday as she pleaded not guilty to motor vehicle homicide charges.

Prosecutors didn't say why Vazquez was driving so fast.

She is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing next month.
