Community mourns loss of 2 Palm Springs officers

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — The community is mourning after two officers were shot and killed in Palm Springs, California Saturday.

One of the slain officers, 63-year-old Jose Vega, was two months away from his retirement. The other, Lesley Zerenby, gave birth to her daughter four months ago.

Officials say John Felix was arrested Sunday morning after a 12-hour standoff with police for the murders.

The two officers responded to a domestic disturbance call Saturday.  But police say Felix refused to let the officers into the house and then shot them through a closed door. A third officer was wounded and is expected to recover.
