Police: 4 teens arrested after rollover crash in carjacked vehicle

REVERE, Mass. — Police arrested four juveniles after a vehicle that was reportedly carjacked in Burlington crashed and rolled over on Route 1A in Revere Tuesday morning.

Officials had been searching for three people and a black 2018 Audi A4 overnight.

Police said the man had just come home from work Monday night when he was carjacked at gunpoint. He was sitting in his parking spot at the Beacon Village apartments checking his email when a young man forced him out of his car.

"All of a sudden his drver's door opened and at that point, he noticed there was a gun in his chest," Deputy Police Chief Thomas Browne said.

Revere Police then found the stolen black Audi early Tuesday morning on Route 1A and tried to pull them over.

Burlington Police Chief Michael Kent confirmed the Audi recovered at the rollover crash was the same vehicle that was allegedly taken at gunpoint Monday night. He said in a statement that four male juveniles were arrested and two BB guns were recovered.

Police said officers were dispatched at around 5:15 a.m. to the area of Ocean Avenue where a caller said they were behind a car they had seen on the news as reported stolen.

Officers saw the car heading westbound on the Revere Beach Parkway in front of the police station and tried stopping it. The car then fled onto 1A southbound and failed to stop again.

At one point, the car struck a pickup truck in traffic, causing it to roll over. The operator of the truck was then trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by firefighters, but sustained non-life threatening injuries, according to a statement from Revere police.

The stolen car sustained heavy damage in the crash and came to a stop southbound on 1A, the statement said. Four people were inside the car and three were taken into custody. The fourth occupant fled on foot but was later taken into custody northbound on 1A, according to police.

The carjacking victim had just pulled into his parking space at the Beacon Village apartment complex in Burlington, just before 7:30 p.m Monday, and was checking his phone before going inside. The victim told police a man opened the driver's side door, pointed a gun at his chest and forced the victim out of the car.

According to police, two other suspects got into the car with the alleged gunman and drove off. The victim's wallet, phone and keys were also taken, police said. Police had been searching for the vehicle since Monday night.

"This was a brazen, violent and unprovoked attack on an innocent resident," Kent said in a statement Monday. "These types of acts are not common in our community and we have no tolerance for them. We will fully investigate this crime and hope to find those responsible and bring them to justice."

While police arrested four suspects in Revere, they could only confirm three initially got in the vehicle during the carjacking. A spokesperson told Boston 25 the victim reported three suspects, but that "does not mean he didn’t miss one or that they [could have] picked somebody up along the way."

Since the suspects are minors, their identities will not be released.
