CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A person was hit and killed by a truck right in the heart of Harvard Square Tuesday morning, according to police.

The victim was pulled from under the truck after bystanders flagged down the driver, according to witnesses.

The woman, later identified as Sharon Hamer, 67, was rushed to the hospital, where she later died.

According to the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office, Hamer was not in a crosswalk when she was hit by the truck near the Out of Town Newsstand.

Traffic was diverted as part of the square was shut down for the investigation.

The truck remained in the intersection for a while and two bus routes were detoured.

DA Marian Ryan says the crash is under investigation but did not say if charges were expected.
