Broken elevators forcing over 200 residents, many elderly, to use stairs

BROCKTON, Mass. — People living in a Brockton public housing apartment complex are angry that the elevators inside the building aren't working.

The Campello High Rise apartment complex has two buildings and both elevators in Building A have been broken for months. Building B only has one working elevator for over 200 residents, but residents tell us on Monday neither of the two elevators were working, forcing many to take the stairs in the 10-story building.

"These are all elderly people and most of them have to walk upstairs all day long. It's been going on for quite a while," said resident Ruth Craft.

Boston 25 News reached out to the Brockton Public Housing Authority. An executive director told us they're replacing the elevators in both buildings and right now they have a manual operator working 24/7 to run the elevator in Building B, but added they do have safety plans in place in case of an emergency.

Residents tell us they feel helpless.

"I can't do the stairs. I hurt my arm going up the stairs. I just stay in my apartment," said resident Bonnie Whynot.

Crews were in one of the buildings Wednesday checking out the elevators, but residents say they're not convinced they'll be fixed.
