BOSTON — This morning, hundreds of people came together to donate blood for the Red Cross, and then many of them headed over to the Greenway to build packages for soldiers overseas and veterans here at home.
The event at the Rose Kennedy Greenway was put together by the Massachusetts Military Fund.
"The contents of the bag are the basic necessities - toiletries, warm clothing, things we many times take for granted - so these are very, very helpful," said Andy Macauley, the President and CEO of the New England Center and Home for Veterans.
Melida Arredondo, a native New Yorker, was at the Greenway today building packages in honor of her late stepson who lost his life serving in Iraq in 2004.
"I watched the towers go up and I watched them come down on TV," Arredondo said. "They need it. That's all there is. It's a need, filling a need."
Sue Campbell lost her husband 11 years ago and has been coming to the Greenway to build packages for soldiers overseas for several years. She says that, on such a difficult day for the country, giving back is a great deal.
"It's overwhelming, to see people helping out all the soldiers," Cambell said.
