Driver charged with OUI after hitting bicyclist in Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. — A bicyclist in Lowell was taken to the hospital after being hit by a car on Sunday night.

Police say the crash happened just before 9 p.m. in the area of 803 Rogers Street, near the Tewksbury line.

Witnesses told police the driver had been traveling into Lowell from Tewksbury at high speed before hitting the cyclist.

The driver, 26-year-old Jacquelyn Hopkinson, of Dracut, stayed on scene and underwent a field sobriety test. Officers determined Hopkinson showed signs of intoxication and arrested her for operating under the influence of alcohol.

The victim was rushed to a Boston hospital with serious injuries. Their condition is unknown at this time.

A photographer with Boston 25 News at the scene said the cyclist was riding a bike owned by Veo-Ride, the company that provides the bike-sharing program in Lowell.

Hopkinson may face additional charges.
