Bicyclist hit and killed along Route 3A in Scituate

SCITUATE, Mass. — Massachusetts State Police is investigating a deadly bicycle accident that happened Friday night in Scituate, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.

The DA said in a news release Saturday afternoon that Howard Colby, 67, was found unresponsive in the roadway in the area of 109 Chief Justice Cushing Highway on Route 3A. Scituate Police received numerous 911 calls around 6:30 p.m. and police and emergency personnel responded.

Colby, of Marshfield, was transported to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth where he died, the release said.

A preliminary investigation shows that Colby was riding his bike along the side of Route 3A when he was struck from behind by a 2001 Mercury Marquis, driven by a 94-year-old man, according to the DA’s release.

The driver, who is not being identified yet, remained on scene after the incident. Investigators saw damage to the front bumper area and windshield, the release said. The driver was transported to South Shore Hospital to be evaluated.

The crash is under investigation.
