Barnstable Public Schools to return to in-person learning April 5

BARNSTABLE, Mass. — On Thursday, April 1 the Barnstable Superintendent wrote she is hopeful that the community will return to in-person learning on Monday. “

“We are grateful for the efforts our BPS community continues to make to support a return to in-person learning. We have seen a significant decline in BPS cases this week. Today I write to provide more of a status report, rather than a decision, about a return to in-person learning. Dr. Katie Rudman and Director of Health Services, Tom McKean, would like to review the weekly DPH dashboard report released at 5 pm today, before providing me with recommendations,” Superintendent Mayo-Brown.

This Cape Cod school district is seeing a large uptick in COVId-19 cases, alarmingly so the school administrators have switched over to remote learning for the end of this week.

Superintendent Dr. Meg Mayo-Brown said in a letter to the Barnstable community Wednesday that students will have remote learning Thursday, March 25, and Friday, March 26. All instructional and after-school programs will not be held at BPS.

“Our BPS data indicates that the community spread of COVID is negatively impacting our schools. Last week we were notified of 45 cases across all nine BPS schools. On Monday and Tuesday of this week, we have been notified of 28 cases, thus far. Additionally, we have 260 staff and students in quarantine as close contacts, and 60 staff and students in isolation with COVID,” said Superintendent Mayo-Brown.

The Superintendent will meet with the district’s physician Dr. Katie Rudman this weekend to go over a plan and determine if BPS will be able to reopen with in-person learning the following week (March 29).

Superintendent Mayo-Brown says for parents to check their email on Sunday, March, 28 for an update.
