April 15: A date that's no stranger to tragedy

PARIS — A huge fire tore through the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Monday, which was April 15, a day that’s very familiar with tragedy.

1865

:

President Abraham Lincoln died at 7:22 a.m. after being assassinated by John Wilkes Booth the previous evening while attending a play in Washington, D.C.

1912:

The luxury British steamship RMS Titanic sank in the early hours off the coast of Newfoundland after striking an iceberg. More than 1,500 passengers and crew members were killed in the disaster. 

2013

:

Two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Three people were killed and 264 others were injured.

2019:

A massive fire engulfed the historic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The fire caused the cathedral's roof to collapse, destroyed a spire and spread to one of the building's two rectangular towers.
