Alleged drunk driver smashes into house in Falmouth overnight Sunday

FALMOUTH, Mass. — A drunk driver smashed into a home in Falmouth early Sunday morning, according to local police. No one was hurt in the house, but it was a close call for the woman that lives inside.

The crash happened on Jones Road around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning when a pick-up truck smashed through the wall of one home on the street.

“I was kind of lightly asleep and what felt like an earthquake woke me up,” that woman said about when she heard the crash. “That whole corner of the house is literally caved in, and everything in that corner was sent flying to the other side of the room, so furniture was totally blown apart like you see in a hurricane.”

She said the room impacted was her son’s room; luckily, he wasn’t home at the time of the crash. The woman said she’s frustrated to learn the man behind the wheel was intoxicated.

That drunk driver came through an intersection and actually drove through a neighbor’s yard, leaving tire tracks in the grass, before crashing through trees and into the home.

“And over the years this is a pretty bad corner for accidents,” the resident said.

Now she hopes the town does something to make the intersection safer since the incident isn’t the first time her neighbors have seen a crash there. She’s also hoping the scene is a wake-up call for anyone who tries to drive after drinking or sees someone who does.

“Someone should have seen that this man was so inebriated and understood that he could not react appropriately and should not have had keys in his hand,” she said.

Falmouth Police say that a 36-year-old driver now faces charges for speeding, negligence and operating under the influence of alcohol.
