State Police were seen diverting traffic on the northbound side through the median onto the southbound side.
Preliminary investigation suggests a 29-year-old Roslindale woman driving in the right lane of I-95 southbound in 2010 Toyota Corolla, near Exit 5, traveled into the middle lane, striking a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck.
That caused both vehicles to travel to the left, across the median and into the northbound lanes, where they then collided with six other vehicles, which included 2007 Hyundai Tuscon, a 2016 Kia Optima, a 2004 Volvo S40, a 2017 Nissan Rogue, a 2004 Toyota Camry, and a 2005 Honda Odyssey.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
'A nightmare'
A man who saw the crash and helped victims at the scene talked to Boston 25 News. Cruz Leon says he was driving on I-95 at the time of the crash and witnessed the entire incident.
Leon said he acted quickly to help save those caught in the crash, pulling a man from a smoking car and prying open a passenger side door to help free a woman.
"It was a nightmare," said Leon.
