All aboard! BPD take young cancer patients on special boat ride

BOSTON — Boston Police are at it again, protecting their community and putting smiles on young faces.

The Cops for Kids with Cancer, a charity launched in 2002 by Boston Police, takes young cancer patients out for a ride on their boat to give them a much needed change of environment.

So far, BPD has helped nearly 5,000 families by raising and donating more than $2.5 million.

It all starts with a special police escort from the hospital through the streets of Boston, complete with blaring sirens all the way to the waterfront.

Two years ago Boston 25 News joined Boston Police as they took some younger kids out that year.

“Cops come together with these young cancer kids and try to brighten up their lives," said Boston Police Commissioner William Evans. "We  give almost every family $5,000 to give them a little something to get through, and we usually bring them down here and take them out on the boat, basically just trying to cheer them up.”

The kids, as you can imagine, were all smiles as they took a much needed break from doctors, hospital rooms and cancer treatments.
