DUXBURY, Mass. — A swimmer has died after being pulled from the water in Duxbury.

Just after noon on Monday, police were called to the beach on Ship Yard Lane for a "swimmer in distress."

People on kayaks and paddleboards saw the 72-year-old man about 100-yards off the beach and pulled him to safety.

"They were able to pull the individual, identified as a 72-year-old male to the shoreline, they did some CPR until he was transported," said Duxbury Police Chief Stephen McDonald.

Cheryl Gleason and her family frequent what they call a private beach on Shipyard Lane in Duxbury. Gleason and her family were saddened when they heard the heartbreaking news.

"I have an 11-year-old and a 9-year-old, we take them here to kayak," she said. "They were out here on lessons, so calm and not a care in the world."
