SEEKONK, Mass. — Police have arrested a suspect in a hit-and-run on Newman Avenue Thursday night that left a 37-year-old woman dead, according Bristol District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III.
Police had been searching for an older model, light-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee with damage to the front passenger side after 37-year-old Antonieta Vargas was hit around 6:54 p.m. while walking with her 11-year-old son. She was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital and later died, the DA's office said; her son was not injured.
Rhode Island State Police arrested Jeremy Schmidt, 27, of East Providence, early Friday morning, on a fugitive from justice charge out of Rhode Island, the DA's office said in a news release.
Schmidt is facing charges of leaving the scene death resulting, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and a marked lane violation, the DA said. Schmidt waived rendition Friday morning in Providence and is being brought to Massachusetts for arraignment in Taunton District Court on Monday.
The defendant has now formally been charged out of Taunton District Court with Leaving the Scene-Death Resulting, Negligent Operation of a MV, and Marked Lane Violation.

If/when the defendant is returned to Massachusetts, he will be arraigned on these charges.
