3 police officers injured after cruisers collide in Brockton during pursuit

BROCKTON, Mass. — Three officers were sent to the hospital after two police cruisers crashed while pursuing a suspect in a stolen car.

One officer was rushed to a Boston hospital with serious injuries, police said. The other two officers were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. All the injuries are considered non-life threatening.

One fo the officers apprehended the 19-year-old suspect before being taken to the hospital, a police spokesperson said.

The crash occurred at West Elm Street and Byron Avenue around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Police spotted a stolen vehicle near the James Edgar Playground on Dover Street. The driver of the stolen Toyota refused to stop for police, and a short pursuit began, police said.

One cruiser followed behind the car, and an additional squad car tried to stop the Toyota from the opposite direction.

Instead of stopping for the police, the operator of the stolen Toyota swerved and scraped the side of the oncoming police car.  As a result, the two cruisers collided on West Elm Street and Byron Avenue.

One of the officers managed to flee the damaged car to chase the suspect on foot.

The officer apprehended the suspect, 19-year-old Admilson Pereira of Dorchester, and charged him with failure to stop for police, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

The crash occurred as the city is mourning the sudden death of Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter.

The 62-year-old Carpenter died hours earlier on Wednesday morning while serving his third term in office.

He served as Brockton's mayor for over five years, and was up for re-election for a fourth term in office.
