22-year-old loses his leg after being impaled by guardrail during crash

A local man has a long road to recovery after he nearly died in a car accident in April.

The crash happened on April 25 on I-93 in Salem, New Hampshire. Jorge Ramirez was riding in the passenger seat of his brother's car when they say another hit them and kept going.

"Spun them out of control from the far right lane to the far left lane and into the guardrail," said Ramirez's sister Iris Cedeno.

The impact was so intense, the guardrail went through the car and into Ramirez's right leg, which had to be amputated.

"When you hit them on impact, at 65-60 they are meant to withstand that kind of impact. They are supposed to fold in like an accordion. Unfortunately, That was not the case here," said Cedeno.

Cedeno tells us her brother was heading to see a friend's newborn baby when they were hit.

"It sliced into the car, through the passenger side, and bent out of the back door, because it had nowhere else to go," said Cedeno.

The family says Ramirez's puppy Sky was in the car and stayed by his side.

"She went over to the lick the wound, and she ran out of the vehicle to bark and call for help. She’s a puppy, she stayed on the side," said Cedeno.

The 22-year-old single father is now at Spaulding Hospital where he will be in rehab for weeks. He says he's can't believe he is alive after what he went through.

The family has set up a GoFundMe so they can get Ramirez a prosthetic leg.

The family is also asking the driver who hit them to come forward.
