2 people shot, 1 dead, in Stoneham home

STONEHAM, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – One person was killed and another person was hospitalized in an overnight double shooting at a Stoneham home.

The victims were found shot on Wednesday morning. A spokeswoman for the Middlesex district attorney's office says one victim died. MaryBeth Long says the shooting "does not appear random."

It happened sometime overnight at 6 Micah's Pond Way, which is in a cul-de-sac. A relative came to the scene and told FOX 25 the victim who died is 27-year-old Joseph Puopolo, a military veteran who had just returned from Afghanistan.

The relative, Joseph Alessandro, who is the godfather of the victim, said Puopolo lived in Stoneham. Puopolo was at the home visiting a friend who lives at the residence with his mother and stepfather, whom the relative told FOX 25 is a Medford police officer.

Alessandro told FOX 25 Puopolo wanted to be a police officer, specifically a state trooper. He also reflected on the type of life Puopolo led. "He'd give you the shirt off his back," he said.

"You know what happened to him? He was in the service - I got the phone call," said Alessandro. "Some kid stepped on a mine. He lost his foot. Joseph picked up the guy's toe and sewed it back together. He got a reward from the military. He saved the guy's life."

Police sources identify the second victim as 24-year-old Mario Fiume. FOX 25 has learned Fiume and Puopolo were friends who grew up together.

FOX 25 also learned three people have been arrested in connection to the shooting.
