Man hit, killed on Rockport Commuter Rail line in Gloucester

GLOUCESTER, Mass. — A man was hit and killed by an MBTA Commuter Rail train in Gloucester Thursday morning, according to the transit agency.

The MBTA warned that riders on the Rockport Line would experience "significant delays" in both directions throughout the morning Thursday due to police activity on the tracks in Gloucester.

Transit police said a man whose age has not yet been determined died after he was hit by an inbound train "while trespassing on the right of way" on the Gloucester branch of the Rockport line. No foul play is suspected, police said, and the incident remains under investigation, according to a news release.

Shuttle buses replaced service between Rockport and West Gloucester..

The incident affected service on other commuter rail lines too, including the Fitchburg line.

The MBTA said service on the Rockport Line would resume with train 112 out of Rockport, which is scheduled to depart for North Station at 11 a.m.

This is the second time this week a person has died after being hit by a commuter rail train. A 21-year-old man died Monday after transit police said he trespassed on the tracks in Belmont and was hit by a Fitchburg line train.
