VMAS 2019: Missy Elliott to finally receive Video Vanguard Award

After years of campaigning from fans, Missy Elliot is finally receiving her due recognition for her innovative music videos.

On Monday, MTV announced Elliot would receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award at the 36th annual Video Music Awards. The rapper, producer, dancer and songwriter will  perform at the award show for the first time since 2003.

"Missy's impact on the music landscape is indelible," Bruce Gillmer, MTV International co-brand head and Viacom music and music talent head, said in a statement to Variety. "Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched."

“I am Humbly Grateful to be receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award,” Elliot tweeted. "I Thank my FANS 'Supafriends' who fought diligently to see this day come @KidFury @crissles who rooted for years 4 me. I am crying happy tears Thank you God @MTV @vmas am SO HUMBLED."

The last time Elliot performed at the show, she made an appearance in Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Madonna's opener and performed her hit "Work It."

Innovative clips, including "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)," "Sock It 2 Me," "Work It" and "Pass That Dutch," are among the most creative and memorable videos in music for any genre.

Past Video Vanguard recipients include The Beatles, David Bowie, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Tom Petty, Beyonce, Kanye West, Rihanna, Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez. Elliot is the first female rapper to receive the honor.

The VMAs are Aug. 26 at 8 p.m. Eastern on MTV.
