Sushi, salads sold at Trader Joe's, other chains recalled amid listeria fears

BROCKTON, Mass. — If you recently bought sushi from Trader Joe's or another store, be sure to check your fridge.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Fuji Food Products is recalling several ready-to-eat dishes, including sushi, spring rolls and salads, over possible listeria contamination, the company announced last week.

The Trader Joe's- or Okami-branded products, which come in plastic containers and bear sell-by dates of Nov. 22 to Dec. 6, were sold at Trader Joe's, 7 Eleven, Walgreens, Food Lion, Hannaford, Giant Eagle Supermarkets, Porky's, Buzzuto's, Supreme Lobster and Superior Foods, an FDA news release said. The items were distributed to or sold in Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and 23 other states, as well as Washington, D.C. See the full list of affected states and products here.

If you have any of the affected items, you should discard them, officials said.

Fuji issued the recall after inspectors alerted the company "of the potential for product contamination with Listeria monocytogenes" at its facility in Brockton, Massachusetts, the release said. The company stopped production at that location and "will restart operation only after we have eliminated the cause and the FDA certifies that our facility is once again free of possible contamination," Fuji CEO Farrell Hirsch said in a statement.

Listeria monocytogenes "can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems," as well as "miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women," the release said. Symptoms include fever, headaches, stiffness, diarrhea, abdominal pain and nausea, officials said.

So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall, the release said.
