Tim Neverett won't return to Red Sox radio booth

BOSTON — Tim Neverett, who spent the last three seasons as Joe Castiglione's partner in the WEEI Red Sox broadcast booth, will not return for the 2019 season.

The announcement was made by Neverett on his Twitter account Tuesday night, when he wrote, "Thank you to the Red Sox front office and loyal radio listeners for the great support I have received, especially this year. Although they wanted me to return, I have decided to let my current contract with WEEI expire in order to pursue other professional opportunities."

Neverett, who previously called games for the Pittsburgh Pirates, took over for Dave O'Brien in the WEEI booth when O'Brien transitioned to the NESN broadcast team in 2016. Occasionally, WEEI put former infielder Lou Merloni in the booth to join Castiglione and Neverett.

An Emerson graduate, Neverett viewed the Red Sox job as a dream opportunity and is disappointed with how the situation was handled by management at WEEI.

He told Chad Finn of The Boston Globe, "I chose to let my contract expire rather than go back and work for them."

According to Neverett, WEEI's management team told him to start looking for another job in June. The Red Sox, apparently, wanted Neverett to return.

WEEI's only statement regarding the issue was posted on its website, credited to Mark Hannon, Entercom's Boston market manager.

"We thank Tim for his efforts and contributions over the years," said Hannon. "He's going out on top after the Red Sox championship season.  We wish Tim the best in his future endeavors."
