Report: Julian Edelman expected to miss 3 weeks of training camp

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman is reportedly expected to miss up to three weeks at the beginning of training camp for an injury to his left thumb, according to multiple ESPN reporters.

The Super Bowl LIII MVP hosted a youth football camp over the weekend where cameras captured Edelman wearing his red receiver's gloves on both hands. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Edelman was seen wearing a thumb brace beneath the glove on his left hand.

The extent of Edelman's apparent injury is unknown, though both Schefter and Field Yates of ESPN are reporting the wideout is expected to miss three weeks. Training camp begins for New England on Thursday, July 25.

Six Patriots were recently placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list on Sunday, including running back Sony Michel, new wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and defensive lineman Deatrich Wise. Edelman was not a part of that group.

New England has a number of wide receivers listed on their depth chart. In addition to Edelman and the injured Thomas, the Patriots list Phillip Dorsett and 2019 first-round-pick N'Keal Harry as part of their receiving corps.

They also have Maurice Harris, Dontrelle Inman, Braxton Berrios, Ryan Davis, Jakobi Meyers, Damoun Patterson and Gunner Olszewski listed as wide receivers. Matthew Slater, who is mainly used on special teams, also appears on the depth chart as a wideout, despite having one career reception.
