Weymouth Police Officer Michael Chesna posthumously promoted to sergeant

WEYMOUTH, Mass. — Weymouth Police Officer Michael Chesna was posthumously promoted to sergeant as the community gathered at a vigil on Monday night.

The Weymouth Police Chief announced Chesna's promotion at the event at Weymouth High School, honoring the two victims after a fatal shooting Sunday night.

Chesna and 77-year-old Vera Adams were shot and killed after an incident in the Burton Terrace neighborhood in Weymouth involving the shooting suspect, Emanuel Lopes.

According to court documents, Chesna found Lopes as he was throwing a rock through a window in the neighborhood.

When Chesna approached Lopes, court documents say Lopes picked up a large rock and charged at the officer.

Police say when Lopes hit Chesna with the rock, Chesna fell to the ground and dropped his gun.

Lopes then used the weapon to shoot Chesna, and eventually killed Adams with the weapon, as well.

Lopes remains in custody after the incident and is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday.
