Weymouth officer shooting: Neighbors describe chaos at scene

Weymouth residents were left stunned after a police officer and a bystander were fatally shot on Sunday morning.

Officer Michael Chesna was shot and killed after an incident with a suspect, identified as Emanuel Lopes. Police say Chesna was struck by a large stone, causing him to drop his gun to the ground before Lopes took the weapon and fatally shot Chesna.

Residents in the area heard the commotion throughout the neighborhood, with screeching tires signaling the violent encounter.

"I could hear the engine, like someone was chasing someone," Sue Nichols said. "I'm like, 'Oh, oh, something's going on."

Neighbors say they had just moments to make odds and ends of the danger unfolding just feet from their front doors.

"That's when I heard, 'Drop your f'n gun,'" Nichols said. "The shots rang out, multiple shots. It was like, 'Oh my god, oh my god.' It was like dead silent."

Nichols soon learned about the tragedy that claimed Chesna's life, but it wasn't until mid-afternoon that she found out what happened to her next door neighbor on Torrey Street.

The retiree had been shot and killed through the glass of her back sunroom.

"I didn't see her this morning," Nichols said. "I was thinking of calling her to see if she was okay."
