IRVING, Texas — A woman is dead after police say she was attacked by her pit bulls at an animal hospital in Irving, Texas.

KXAS reported that Irving Police Department officials said the two dogs were quarantined at O'Connor Animal Hospital to be tested for rabies after they got loose and bit someone.

"The dogs were involved in an incident earlier in the month in which they bit someone," Officer David Dickinson told KDFW. "They were here at the animal hospital being quarantined per regulations. (The owner) was attending to the dogs, coming up to the dogs, and it's my understanding that she was walking the dogs when the event occurred."

The woman was later identified as 33-year-old Johana Natalie Villafane. Hospital staff allowed her to visit her dogs during the week. She was walking the dogs in an exercise area when she was attacked by her pets.

KTVT reported police responded at 11:45 a.m. Saturday after employees saw Villafane bleeding on the ground and being attacked by the two dogs.

Police said the dogs were shot and killed when they would not allow first responders and hospital staff near Villafane.

Villafane was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
