"The level of callousness alleged is stunningly atrocious," District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement, according to KPIX. "A person who would cause this degree of harm to a defenseless dog should not be allowed to have any animal in their care."

Jones has been arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty and misdemeanor abandonment of an animal. The San Francisco Chronicle reported he pleaded not guilty in court March 15.

The dog, which has since been treated at the vet for dehydration and had her broken leg amputated, has been named Rocky by San Francisco Animal Care & Control officers.

KNTV reported that Rocky has been adopted by animal control Officer Rebecca Fenson.

“She’s active, she’s energetic, she’s lively, and she is adapting very quickly,” Fenson said. “I know Rocky’s story, I know what she went through, and it’s great to be able to provide a loving home that she deserves.”

Jones is due back in court March 28.
