Pampers releasing 'smart diapers' for parents to track sleep, diapering, feeding

Pampers has announced a new line of smart diapers that come with an app for parents to track the wetness of their baby's diaper.

CNN reported that Pampers officials said its Lumi by Pampers line has a waitlist ahead of its fall release in the US. The diapers include an activity sensor, baby monitor and 10-day supply of diapers. The sensor works with a smartphone app that logs baby's pee and tracks patterns. Bowel movements are not tracked, but sleep is.

"Parents didn't ask for a poo or pee alarm; they wanted something more like the smartwatches of today," a Pampers spokesperson told CNN. "The activity sensor tracks baby's sleep and since it's there on the diaper, it can also track ... if a diaper is wet."

The diapers are based on Pampers Swaddlers, but enhanced with the activity sensor, which won't work with other brands, the Cincinnati Business Courier reported.

A spokeswoman for Proctor & Gamble, which owns Pampers, told the Cincinnati Business Courier that the diaper was developed after speaking to parents about what needs they wanted met for their baby. Three needs were revealed: a safe and comfortable baby, routine, and parents having an understanding of their baby's mental and physical development.

"While there are many tools and solutions to address some of these problems, none of the existing products on the market address all three together in a frictionless way," P&G spokeswoman Mandy Treeby said.
