Standard licenses more popular than Real IDs in Massachusetts

Nearly five months ago, Massachusetts began offering upgraded licenses that comply with federal security standards. But the Real ID licenses don't seem to be too popular with residents in the state.

In fact, the RMV says they've issued more standard licenses than Real ID's since March.

According to Mass.gov, Real ID's were created in 2005 as a result of increased federal security measures after the September 11 terrorist attacks. And starting in October 2020, you'll need a Real ID to fly within the United States or to enter federal buildings.

If you don't have one, be prepared to bring along your passport.

There are a few differences between standard licenses and the upgraded ones. But the most notable one is a gold star in the upper right corner of the Real ID's that will indicate that the card is federally compliant.

You don't need a Real ID until October 2020 -- but it doesn't hurt to find out more.
