PD: Suspected drunken driver leads police on wrong-way chase before crashing

BURLINGTON, Mass. — A suspected drunken driver is recovering at the hospital after leading police on a chase and crashing his car overnight.

Just after 2 a.m. Monday, a Burlington Police officer saw a car with multiple taillights out driving erratically on Middlesex Turnpike. Police say the car was driving very slowly, but then would suddenly speed up and veer off the road.

The officer thought the driver was intoxicated and tried to pull him over when he got onto I-95 northbound.

The driver reportedly refused to stop and sped off down the highway and off at exit 34.

Police say the driver then made a U-turn and drove back up the wrong way toward the police cruiser, narrowly missing it. The driver continued the wrong way up the ramp and began to drive the wrong way on I-95 before jumping an on-ramp median and proceeding back north on the highway.

The driver then tried to get off the highway at exit 35 but lost control. The car rolled over and crashed at the bottom of the highway ramp near the Rt. 38 rotary.

The driver was ejected from the car and taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Police say the driver was identified as a 24-year-old man from Uganda, but police say they found multiple forms of conflicting identification so they have not positively identified the man.

Several miniature bottles of alcohol were found ejected at the site and police say they believe alcohol was "a significant factor."

According to Burlington Police, the pursuit reached speeds of 90 mph and lasted for about two minutes.

The incident is under investigation.
